March 9, 2008 - Posted in Scholarship

The Zonta Club of Leelanau County, an international women’s service club, will offer a scholarship aboard the Inland Seas Education Association’s

schoolship Inland Seas to a young woman in the ninth, tenth or eleventh grades.

As part of the Zonta-sponsored “Young Women in Science” program, the scholarship recipient will spend two days sailing aboard the Inland Seas to participate in Great Lakes research. The dates of this year’s event are June 17-18.

Young women from around the state will join Inland Seas scientists to document the water quality and aquatic biology of Suttons Bay and Grand Traverse Bay, and complete their own research projects. They will also become members of the schooner crew by sailing and navigating the ship and spending a night at sea.

Those interested in applying for the Zonta scholarship may request an application from their high school counselor or science teacher, or contact Carol Smith, Zonta scholarship committee member, by phone at 922-6281 or via email at
