2009 Glenn Miller Vocal and Instrumental Scholarships

Scholarship applications for the 2009 Glenn Miller Vocal and Instrumental Scholarships have been streaming in, representing 26 states and one foreign country.

Fifty-three instrumental and 43 vocal applications have been received from the states of Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. An application was also received from Indonesia, a first for the Scholarship Competition. Never before has an applicant been from another country.

Instrumental competitors are performing on a wide range of instruments – cello, clarinet, drums, euphonium, flute, french horn, guitar, marimba, oboe, percussion, piano, piccolo, saxophone, alto saxophone, trombone, bass trombone, tenor trombone, trumpet and violin. The vocalists include soprano, mezzo soprano, alto, tenor, bass and baritone.

The next step was for the Competition Screening Committee to review all the applications and select the students who will perform at the Competition Finals on Thursday, June 11 during the Festival. The winners will be featured at the Stage Show on Saturday, June 13 at 10:15 a.m.

Vocal Scholarships will be 1st Place GMBS-Ray Eberle Scholarship, $4,500; 2nd Place GMBS-Ralph Brewster Scholarship, $2,000; 3rd Place GMBS-Jack & Harriet Pullan Scholarship, $1,000. Instrumental Scholarships will be 1st Place GMBS Scholarship, $4,5000; 2nd Place GMBS-Bill Baker/Hans Starreveld Scholarship, $2,000; 3rd Place GMBS Scholarship, $1,000. These scholarships are funded by the memberships that are above the regular membership of $25 and by donations.

If you have never attended the Scholarship Competition Finals, you have missed an outstanding opportunity to witness the future movers and shakers of the music world. All of these students exhibit extraordinary talent and skills.
