The Fort HealthCare Partners Scholarship Committee has announced this year’s award recipients. Five area students received scholarships to support their continuing education in the health care field.

Nursing scholarships are awarded to qualified candidates who are pursuing a career in health care, students currently enrolled in an associate degree nursing program and to students pursuing an advanced degree in a health care field. Additionally, a scholarship in memory of Woody Finn goes to a health care student that serves regularly in a volunteer role. Finn was a long-time, dedicated volunteer at Fort Memorial Hospital.

Scholarship recipients are:

High School Health Career awards – $2,000 each, Rebecca Martin, Lake Mills; Michelle Wynn, Whitewater.

Health Careers Advancing Education scholarship – $2,000 each, Shirley Mae Brown, Fort Atkinson; Terri Wenkman, Jefferson.

Woody Finn Memorial scholarship – $2,000, Zachary Stewart, Jefferson.

Martin is graduating from Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills and plans to attend Viterbo University in La Crosse to study nursing. She is currently employed at Sentry Foods, Lake Mills, and is very involved in her community and school activities. Martin was an ambassador for the Lake Mills Chamber of Commerce and assisted with community blood drives and Relay For Life events.

Wynn is a senior at Whitewater High School, has completed the certified nursing assistant course (CNA) and will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to study pre-nursing. Wynn worked for Relay For Life, helped the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, assisted with blood drives and helped out at children’s summer camps.

Brown is a registered nurse at the Fort HealthCare Lake Mills clinic. She received her associate degree in nursing from Madison Area Technical College in Fort Atkinson and is now pursuing a bachelor of science-nursing degree at Viterbo University in La Crosse. Brown has also completed the Parish Nurse Program at Marquette University, and is involved with diabetic education events. She teaches a baby-sitting class through Fort HealthCare. Much of her volunteer work has been on medical trips to Ecuador.

Wenkman holds a degree in social work and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Viterbo University. She received her associate degree in nursing from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. Wenkman is a registered nurse working on the medical/surgical/pediatrics unit at Fort Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson. She has worked as a case manager for Volunteers of America in the Minneapolis area and was a training specialist at St. Coletta of Wisconsin in Jefferson.

Stewart is a senior at Jefferson High School, planning on majoring in biology and pre-med at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a CNA at Golden Living Center in Fort Atkinson. Stewart has also volunteered at the Fort Atkinson Senior Center and at St. John the Baptist church. He also participated in mission work in Detroit, and also served on the Governor’s Conference of Energy.

Fort HealthCare Partners scholarship candidates must be residents in the Fort HealthCare service area, which includes Cambridge, Fort Atkinson, Helenville, Jefferson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills, Palmyra, Sullivan and Whitewater. While grade point average is important, it is not the primary consideration. Financial need is considered as well as community/professional activities.
